Our Interventions

At  Ikoku Protection and Justice, we believe that  every child deserves a second chance and a justice system that prioritizes their well-being. Our interventions are designed to address the root causes of juvenile delinquency, focusing on protection, rehabilitation and reintegration.

Awareness in the remand homes

This is through interactive board and card games customized to suit the Ugandan legal system. The games will simplify the court process from arrest to conviction,
address child-specific legal issues and teach the juvenile offenders how to ask relevant
questions to witnesses.

Legal Representation

This intervention targets child offenders facing non-capital offenses. We
identify those in need of support through police referrals and awareness sessions. After
reviewing each case file and confirming court dates, volunteer advocates are recruited to
assist. These volunteers work in the Family-Children Court and Local-Council-Courts while
also engaging with the child’s family and the victim to ensure comprehensive support throughout
the legal process.

Advocacy

Our advocacy efforts revolve around storytelling to depict the real-life experiences of children
and families within the juvenile justice system. Through our weekly podcast series, (justi-CEED) and quarterly documentaries, we
share engaging narratives that feature interviews with experts, key stakeholders, and those
directly impacted by the system.

Rehabilitation of child offenders

We have a 2 weeks workshop held within the remand facilities targeting the 12-17-year-old
child offenders (re-offenders and one-time offenders) that have committed petty offenses. The workshop focuses on reducing
reoffending by helping child offenders understand their rights and the legal process as well as addressing their trauma and building
self-awareness by guiding them to recognize the consequences of their actions.

Capacity Building

This targets professionals working within the juvenile justice system. For instance, child advocates, law enforcement, the judi8ciary, Probation and social Welfare officers and local council court representatives. We provide them with tools and skills to create a child-friendly justice.
