About Us

About Us

Our Vision

A continent where every child in conflict with the law receives fair treatment guided by the principles of children rights and restorative justice.

Our Mission

To deliver comprehensive legal aid and advocate for child offenders, ensuring fair treatment and supporting restorative justice to reduce wrongful detentions.

Our Philosophy

At our core, we as Ikoku Protection and Justice believe every child deserves a second chance
to thrive! Our philosophy is rooted in the principles of child-centered justice, where protection,
empathy, and fairness guide our actions. We strive to create a legal system where justice is
defined by restoration not punishment.

Our Values

Challenging the status quo

means that, as a team, we question existing practices in juvenile
justice, seeking innovative solutions for better outcomes. For the child offenders, it causes them
to speak up, assert their rights, and engage with a system that listens to their voices while
advocating for fairer, more supportive practices.

Empathy

is a guiding principle for us. As a team, we aim to understand and respond to the
struggles faced by child offenders by treating each case with care and compassion. For the
beneficiaries, it’s about connecting with and supporting each other, building a sense of
community as they work towards rehabilitation.

Diversion

as a core value means that, as a team, we advocate for alternatives to formal legal
proceedings, focusing on restorative justice over punishment. For the child offenders it provides
a second chance, helping them avoid the negative effects of the justice system while guiding
them toward personal growth and reintegration into their communities.

Founder's Story

an image of Maria, the founder of Ikoku Protection and justice

As I look back on my career, one shadow looms larger than the rest: the guilt of missing a chance to help two young offenders wrongfully imprisoned in an adult facility. This guilt is a constant reminder of the moral weight of my profession and the profound impact my decisions or lack thereof can have on vulnerable lives.

These young offenders lived in appalling conditions, surrounded by adult inmates in a cramped, dimly lit space with cold cement floors and minimal comfort. They had no legal representation or interpreter and were kept in confinement far longer than allowed by law. With inadequate food, lack of hygiene, and no contact with their families, they were isolated and afraid, unable to understand or defend their situation. This experience has driven me to take action and seeking to right my wrongs by bringing justice and hope to those who, like the two boys I failed, deserved better. It is this passion for justice that has led me to create Ikoku Protection and Justice, to ensure that no other child experiences what they endured.
